Neville Porter
“My images display the natural beauty, drama and strength of the landscape and I investigate the structure of the ever-changing natural world through my lens.”
Neville has had a passion for photography for more than three decades with New Zealand’s dynamic landscape allowing him to capture fleeting moments of power and diversity in all types of weather. His work is a display of dramatic contrast between the sculptural and natural landscape; the burnt brown of Central Otago, the snow white slopes, the lush spring growth and the colours of berries and flowers.
With the aim to ‘create’ lasting views, Neville’s opportunities of travel and exploration allow him to be curious and respectful while finding a place's soul, instead of it just being a geographical representation. He rarely follows obvious landmarks to create a scene and while doing so, anticipates the viewers participation in their own way. He encourages them to be curious and contemplate unfamiliar scenes to evoke landscapes of memory and imagination.
Photography has provided Neville with the opportunity to create his own worldview interpretations to evolve his art form. In 2018, Neville began exploring Washi Paper for reproduction of his artwork and went to Japan to better understand the 1600 year old process of Washi papermaking. The unique qualities of Washi Paper have been valued by artists in the East and West for centuries. For example, Rembrandt greatly prized the special qualities of Washi Paper imported by the East India Company to Europe. This traditional handmade paper was registered by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage item in 2014.
Neville is a New Zealand ambassador for Leica Cameras who invented 35mm photography in the early 1900’s and are legendary for their quality of lenses. Leica still produces cameras that use film in contrast to also creating some of the best digital cameras in the world.
